St John the Evangelist church, Lyneal cum Colemere
Brief History
John Spencer, 2nd Earl Brownlow conceived the idea of a church at Colemere in 1852, but he did not live to see his dream fulfilled. After his death in 1867, his mother, Lady Alford had the church built as a memorial to him. To design the church, she turned to the services of G E Street, one of the great architects of his age (he also restored York Minster and Salisbury cathedral). The foundation stone was laid on 3rd June 1869 and local stone, brought from Cefn by canal to Lyneal Wharf, was used in the construction.
Today the church stands out as the simple, yet beautiful crown in the jewel that is Colemere.
